Heritage Day at Nathalia Historical Museum

Last weekend saw a large gathering of people attend the Nathalia & District Historical Society Museum for a day of fun and learning.

Several old trades were demonstrated including blacksmithing by Karen Davis. She was able to demonstrate the skills of this old trade and brought quite a bit of interest, especially from the younger visitors. Karen also demonstrated the art of spinning and had several spinning wheels set up for anyone to have a go.

Helen Ryan showed the technique used for rope-making which was a new experience for many.

Lyn Franklin’s talk on the meaning behind the many symbols found at a cemetery proved very informative and interesting to visitors and Judy Ormond was able to give helpful guidance for people wishing to trace their ancestors.

A display and taste samples of food from yesteryear and another showing the old-style laundry set up also proved interesting to visitors.

There were children’s games, such as hopscotch, skipping rope, quoits and marbles which saw quite a few grandmas and grandpas demonstrating that they have not lost their skills.

A Devonshire afternoon tea rounded out what was a very successful day. Thanks must go to the museum volunteers for their efforts in making this day happen.
